Provider of Internet services to the consumer and SME markets, M-Web, has announced a free email virus protection service as the latest addition to its bag of value adds.
“With a 245 000-strong subscriber base sending and receiving up to 65 million emails a month, we have recognised the need to protect both our users and ourselves from the increasing threat of global virus traffic,” says Andrew Milne, Senior General Manager of M-Web Online. “Virus damage, whilst a very real issue, retains an intangible feel and often fails to command the attention it deserves – so that users, particularly consumers and small/home office owners, neglect to take the necessary precautions. While this poses enormous threat to each networked computer, it endangers our service tremendously because of the effect of runaway virus traffic on our SMTP and HTTP pathways.”
Users are automatically subscribed to this free service without needing to download, install or re-configure anything. The service employs a server-based system – powered by Norton AntiVirus for Gateways, supplied by Symantec – that automatically detects and destroys infected attachments. Multiple AntiVirus scanners, connected across fast ethernet switches, operate a distributed denial of service situation across M-Web’s transparent gigabit backbone. In this way, all emails are intercepted and infected attachments either cleaned or deleted before being downloaded by subscribers. A convenient notification service communicates to both the sender and recipient the nature of the virus infection and the action taken.
