Lake County says computers hit by virus again

What first appeared a simple equipment malfunction may be another virus attacking Lake County government computers.

While technicians were still conducting tests Tuesday afternoon, Lake County Data Processing Director Mark Pearman said they were “fairly certain” the county has been hit by its second computer virus in three weeks.

The initial diagnosis — that a piece of hardware in the county data processing center had gone haywire — apparently was a red herring, Pearman said.

“We think the virus is designed to make it seem like the problem could be coming from several different areas,” he said.

About half the 1,500 computers in the Lake County government center were still exhibiting problems of some sort Tuesday, Pearman said.

Employees in various departments said they were having trouble logging on to their computers, accessing the Internet or getting into special county property tax programs.

Lake County Deputy Assessor Sherry Stone said workers in that office were concentrating on clerical work, because they could not get on to the network.

“We have plenty to do,” she said.
