The General Department of Citizenship and Passports Affairs will soon launch its online services for citizens to renew their passports through the Internet, sources from the department told Al-Watan Arabic daily. Confirming the department will coordinate with the concerned authorities to protect the website from hackers, sources disclosed General Manager of the department Brigadier Sheikh Faisal Al-Nawaf will spearhead the implementation of the project under the supervision of Assistant Undersecretary for Citizenship and Passports Affairs Major General Sheikh Ahmed Al-Nawaf.

Sources explained citizens should provide accurate information when applying for the renewal of their passports online. They said the database will be secured as the website contains sensitive information, such as the names of blacklisted citizens. In related developments, sources affirmed the GCC nations have agreed to punish citizens who give their passports or citizenship certificates as guarantee for loans obtained from any second party, including car rental companies, gas stations and commercial establishments.
