#HITB2012KUL Capture The Flag Competition Sees Teams Go 'Thermonuclear'

What first began as a small gathering for computer security enthusiasts in 2002, the Hack In The Box Security Conference series  (HITBSecConf) has since grown into a must attend event in the calendar of security professionals from around the globe. Next month, HITBSecConf will celebrate it’s 10th year anniversary (8th - 11th October) where it will unleash the latest expansion to it's ever popular Capture The Flag (CTF) competition, dubbed Fallout Apocalypse.

HITB’s Capture The Flag is a team-based 'live hacking' challenge that pits teams of 3 in a head-to-head grueling 32-hour battle where up and coming talents are unearthed and teams get a chance to not only prove their skills amongst their peers but claim bragging rights of competing in one of the most grueling network security 'games' around.

The latest expansion of the CTF - Fallout Apocalypse - will see teams attacking rivals’ ‘nuclear power plants’ while at the same time defending their own from incoming attacks. Teams will own and manage a ‘nuclear power plant’ which consists of seven reactor cores. Each reactor core represents a custom vulnerable service which generates ‘money’ from the production of nuclear energy. Teams will need to hack into their rivals' nuclear ‘facility’ and disrupt the core reactors to prevent their rivals from generating more money, which also represents their total points. An animated world map is used to visualize attacks and other events to give spectators an idea of what goes on during the game.

Fallout Apocalypse will also feature a ‘black market’ where teams can auction off exploits to the highest bidder and also purchase upgrades made available from the CTF Crew.

“We are really looking forward to seeing the creative attacks and strategies from teams and also the alliances which will be formed and broken. It’s like watching a game of Risk, but with real-world hacking involved!”, said Amin “RuFI0” Hamid, HITB CTF Overlord 2.0 and CEO of StrykeLabs, the main organizers of this year’s competition.

"This is also the first time we’re collaborating with the previous and current HITB CTF crews and we’re excited to be working with them in putting together an amazing game", he added.

Spanning across 2 days and held in an open-to-public area, the competition kicks off at 10.30 MYT on the 10th of October at the Intercontinental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and ends at 17.30 MYT on the 11th of October.

Fallout Apocalypse is organized by StrykeLabs and sponsored by Trustwave Spiderlabs. A  further USD3133.7 cash prize for the first place team has been provided by Panda Security with custom collectible biatch&dawg hoodies and t-shirts as prizes for the second and third place winners.
