Hackers target Finnish forum, crack logins for almost 80,000 users
A group of hackers has disclosed the login information of approximately 79,000 forum users in Finland. The group is thought to have used a brute-force dictionary method to determine the passwords based on password hashes presumably obtained by hacking forum servers.
The login information file was made available for download online, but has since been taken down. The file is still being distributed on peer-to-peer networks. "We cracked 78,000 (ok, almost 79,000) accounts around the net and of course we'd like to share them with you," says an introduction in the password file seen by Ars. "We hope you all enjoyed. You'll hear more about us sooner than you think. So don't worry, if you weren't on the list, wait for the next release." Most of the rest of the text is in Finnish.
The hackers responsible for the incident identify themselves only as The Magical Pink Bear and ZeroPoint.
