The Asus Eee Pad Transformer will be the first Android tablet to receive an update to Android 4.0, 'Ice Cream Sandwich', announced today by Google in tandem with the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone..

"[The] Transformer will be getting update to ICS - but we can't provide a schedule at this stage," an Asus spokesman told UK gadget site Pocket-lint. The announcement makes the Eee Pad Transformer the first tablet to be definitely slated for an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, ahead of rivals such as the Motorola Xoom - the flagship device used to show off Ice Cream Sandwich's predecessor, Honeycomb, at Google's launch event.

The new mobile OS unifies tablet and smartphone versions of Android, and comes with a raft of new features including that replace physical buttons, new features for the lock screen, the ability to group apps and shortcuts, face recognition to unlock the phone, near-field communications (NFC) technology dubbed Android Beam, and enhanced voice input features.
