Economy's Plight = Crackers' Delight?

With the recent downturn in the economy and corporate earnings in the toilet, spending pressures are being felt across all industry segments. Technology spending is down as organizations are restructuring, trying to cut costs. Question: Where do the cuts come from? Despite continued advocacy from within the security community, security is still not widely seen as the business enabler that it truly is. Security continues to dwell in the cost-center basement and appears poised to stay there in the short term. Now, more than ever, security threats may be originating from within... the attack of the slash and burn budget process. Security is about mitigating risk and limiting liability. This is not something that can be sacrificed to the bottom line. Efficiency is good, but ignorance is not bliss. Don't let your corporation get stuck in the mindset that security is an obstacle to negotiate around and an easy target for budget cuts. In order to keep driving the top line, you need to be able to play ball. Tight operational security is one hell of a bat; and without it, you should take your ball and go home. You've got no business playing.
