DevianART Email Database Got Hacked Too
DevianART — a popular social networking site for artists and artist wannabes — is the latest to fall victim to hackers. The company has informed its users that its email database, which contains more than 13 million addresses, has been hacked. As a result, DevianART users could potentially become victims of spam or phishing attacks. Luckily, passwords have not been compromised. The company issued the following statement in a newsletter:
“Silverpop Systems, Inc., a leading marketing company that sends email messages for its clients, told us that information was taken from its servers. This was probably part of a sweep by spammers. As a result, email addresses belonging to deviantART members were copied. Corresponding usernames and birth date may also have been removed.”
Just a few days ago, both the McDonalds and Gawker databases were hacked, exposing thousands of users’ email addresses. In the case of Gawker, even passwords were compromised.
