Critical System At Risk: Does Linux on the Mainframe Provide a Way Out?
Source: Consulting Times
"You can't go to the moon in a hot air balloon.
Equally unwise are the regular attempts to float massive e-mail and collaboration systems from over-inflated racks of Exchange servers. In our overview of this problem, E-mail in the Enterprise, we noted three points of danger to any enterprise embarked on this mode of message transport:
- The low-profile, jerry-built Exchange networks in place today fail to provide the mission-critical security and reliability routinely expected of large mainframe systems running Linux.
- There is no central repository, where information can be mined to competitive advantage.
- Exchange servers are totally incapable of handling the explosive growth in messaging volume that most enterprises are now experiencing.
The solution, in two words, is "server consolidation". We can expect to see centralizing forces, led by Linux on IBM, actively engage Microsoft's immovable objects, encircling this valuable corporate turf.
