Could an AOLinux Compete with Microsoft?

L33tdawg: While we all know that the rumours are false, this is still a pretty interesting article all the same. Personally I've always felt that Corel Linux would have been 'the one' that could perhaps put up a formidable fight against Microsoft... but we all know what happened to Corel's Linux outfit now don't we?

The recent Washington Post report suggesting a possible purchase of Red Hat (Nasdaq: RHAT) by AOL (NYSE: AOL) rekindled a strategic plan long developing in my mind.

Linux has long needed a major corporate champion to push it into the consumer space. Technologically, the operating system is ready. In comparison with Windows 95 at the time that OS began to become mainstream, it seems clear that Linux has more advanced GUI options. I have little doubt that most users would adapt to and become comfortable with it very quickly.

One feature that Linux does not have is a strategic business plan. Its developers and advocates push it in every direction to see what it is capable of, and it has found fertile ground in a number of important markets.

But what corporate muscle does Linux have? How can it approach a potential customer and clinch the sale without leaving room for second thoughts or backing out?

Having the best tool for the job did not make Microsoft the heavyweight it is today. What did that job was the marketing that told people its products were ready (even when they were not), and the no-compromises business deals that the company arranged.
