Every now and then, something that I do all of the time with barely a thought stops working. The feeling that I get in these moments is not unlike what you might expect to feel if one morning your car key no longer fit in your car door or your hot-and cold-water knobs suddenly switched roles. My first reaction is generally disbelief. Then, I back up and try again. If the problem persists, I begin to reflect on what it is I think I know about what I'm doing and to imagine what kind of conditions could suddenly cause an everyday kind of Unix command to stop working.
