The newest major player in the wireless game is still profitable -- and that's a claim few carriers can make right now. But is another buying spree in the works?
Of the six major national wireless companies, only two turned a profit last year: Cingular and Verizon Wireless. Things have changed since the late 1990s, when carriers watched their customer base grow 20 to 30 percent a year and experts thought the growth charts would continue upward indefinitely. Since then, the expansion has slowed dramatically, and carriers have faced brutal price wars and declining revenues.
