Apple Battles Frauds in iTunes

posted onJuly 7, 2010

Apple Inc. said it is putting new security measures in its iTunes store after hundreds of consumers' accounts were breached by an app developer, the latest sign that the popular online service is attracting unscrupulous activity.

Other customers, in interviews, have complained about fraudulent activity on iTunes. Some say hackers have hijacked their accounts and gone on digital spending sprees—and claim Apple has done little to stop them.

While the number of accounts that were breached in the latest incident was small—Apple said about 400 of its 150 million iTunes users were affected—it renews concerns about how well companies and individuals are protecting sensitive data.
