According to the General Accounting Office (GAO), intertwining the encryption technologies of various government agencies is currently the biggest challenge facing an initiative that would streamline the development of a U.S. "e-government." Universal PKI technology implementation appears to be the next step in the process but cost and scalability may stand in its way. Authentication and non-repudiation are certainly important components of many government related applications, but with such a huge investment and hope that PKI and PKI interoperability will bring "e-government" to the masses this article causes one to wonder if the GAO has lost sight of the applications "e-government" will support.
