Android 2.3 'Gingerbread' update imminent

Google looks set to release the latest version of its Android operating system, codenamed Gingerbread, in the next few days.

Alvaro Fuentes Vasquez, a member of the leadership team at the Open Handset Alliance concerned with Android, suggested in a Twitter post written in Spanish that the over-the-air update will arrive at some point this week.

"Prepare your Nexus One (Developer version) for Android over-the-air update 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the next few days," he wrote. When contacted, Google said it had "nothing to announce right now". The timing would certainly fit with the recent delivery of a giant gingerbread man at Google's headquarters, in a similar promotional stunt to updates such as Éclair, Froyo and Cupcake.
