The Ministry of Communications designated French communication firm Alcatel to provide a broadband fibre optic access network that will cover about 60 per cent of the state's telephone subscribers. The focus will be on residential homes and areas.
No details on the value of the contract were provided but the deal will eventually enable the Communications Ministry to offer telephone subscribers in Kuwait voice, video and data services - including high speed Internet - via a fibre optic cable network.
Currently, Kuwait's telephone network relies on a copper infrastructure. This network will be dismantled and replaced by the fibre optic network. "Based on the latest telecommunication technology, the new network will be the platform from which to provide an extensive range of broadband and narrowband services to Kuwaiti homes. It will position Kuwait as the country with the most advanced telecommunications infrastructure in the region. We also believe that selecting a major vendor like Alcatel is a key to success," said Nabeel Bin Salamah, Communications Ministry Assistant Undersecretary.
