63% of sites surveyed didn't even know they'd been hacked

A StopBadware & Commtouch survey of 600 website owners who suffered a website breach found that: 

  • 63% did not know they had been hacked.
  • 20% were hacked because hackers exploited out of date or insecure software
  • 12% were hacked because the computer used to update their website was infected with a virus or malware.
  • 9% were convinced they were hacked because of shared hosting 
  • 6% said weak authentication with either their own username/password or a colleagues was used to compromise the site 
  • 2% used a public computer or public WiFi network to make changes to their site
