1Password 3.9 transitions to Mac App Store, with some pain

1Password version 3.9 is now available exclusively via Apple's Mac App Store. This version also requires Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and will require users to pay a $20 upgrade fee. This update illustrates the an apparently awkward situation for developers with existing users. Users with conventional license keys won't transfer over to Mac App Store purchases for the same versions.

To smooth things over AgileBits is offering new Mac App Store users a free upgrade to the pending version 4 of 1Password. In a blog post, AgileBits indicates this is savings of 60%, and available only for a limited time. It's worth noting that 1Password has sold for $40, so it seems the price is going up a few bucks on the Mac App Store.
