Sony Interested in Releasing Older, Non-PlayStation Games on PSN
Anyone who complains about how Sony has handled releasing PSOne Classics on the PlayStation Store has a valid point. Compared with the support the service has seen in Japan, the offerings in the U.S. have been nothing short of abysmal. While there might not be any guarantees that the catalog is suddenly going to explode with releases -- though Sony promises this will change -- Sony has been talking with publishers about the interesting proposition of bringing their back catalogs to PSN, including games that weren't originally on Sony platforms.
Speaking with MTV Multiplayer, PlayStation's U.S. marketing head, John Koller, explained, "In general there's a lot of discussion about [publishers'] back catalogs that will finally find its way to PlayStation Network in the back half of this year."
Bringing over a game that wasn't released on PSOne, though, presents obvious problems. But Koller says Sony isn't going to stop them from broadening the horizons of downloadable games on PSN. "We look for some of those big hits from all of the past games in their history and look for ways we can bring them over. It's not always easy. There's obviously technical areas that need to be bridged. But when those are solved, consumers will see a wide variety of retro games and brand new games coming to PSN."
