Cisco study: Beware Facebook at Work

Companies need to better grasp the creep of social networking in the workplace lest they fall prey to the risks therein, according to a Cisco survey released this week. The business world is at the early stages of adopting these tools and in the process of identifying key challenges, which necessitates corporate governance and IT intervention, the company found.

The new study is based on interviews with 105 participants representing 97 organizations in 20 countries. Seventy-five percent of respondents reported using social networking tools at work yet only one in seven indicated a formal process associated with adopting such tools.

This, to Cisco, indicates that "the potential risks associated with these tools in the enterprise are either overlooked or not well understood." One in five participants identified any policies in place concerning the use of social networking technologies in the enterprise.
