Akamai pitches security for web-based applications

Akamai has released a line of services which aim to protect web-based applications from attacks. The company said that the new services would help to spot vulnerabilities in applications and protect against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

The DDoS defense architecture system will monitor traffic and spot potential DDoS attacks. Additionally, the service will help protect applications when a possible DDoS attack is launched and help to prevent downtime.

Performed by flooding sites with data requests and causing an outage, DDoS attacks have long been a favourite tool for attackers looking to disable web sites. The technique was recently used by the Anonymous group to target companies connected to the WikiLeaks crackdown.
