Last week, I was reflecting on the vulnerability of widely used operating systems to malicious code such as viruses. In very timely fashion, PalmSource has come along with proposals to harden the Palm operating system in its next version.

Nextel's BlackBerry ripe for picking

Research In Motion on Tuesday launched a new BlackBerry handheld with wireless carrier Nextel Communications.

As previously reported, the two companies said they were working on a device to be released in early December. The new $499 BlackBerry 6510 will ship this week. It's the first two-way communications device to run on Nextel's network.

TOKYO (AP) Dell Computer Corp. said Tuesday it would introduce a handheld personal digital assistant device in the United States sometime next year.

The company had not yet decided a specific release date, company spokeswoman Risa Sakamoto said.

Palm (Quote, Company Info) is gearing up for what may be a busy week for the handheld computer maker.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company Friday said it will be unveiling two new handhelds under its new sub-brand, Tungsten. The product announcements and launch event will be broadcast live on the Web.
