Antiphishing standard in the works from Google, Facebook, others

The 15 companies will be announcing on Monday DMARC.org, which stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance--a system for verifying that e-mails are coming from legitimate companies and not imposters trying to trick people into clicking a phishing link. Basically, the system offers a common way for companies to authenticate their legitimate communications with customers.

Anonymous Mounts Legal Protest Against PayPal

Anonymous and LulzSec has PayPal in its crosshairs but this time it's using a legal strategy to battle the online payment processor.

The protest is in response to the 14 arrests that were made in connection with the DDoS attack against PayPal, specifically the arrest of Mercedes Renee Haefer, a journalism student at the university of Las Vegas who faces up to 15 years in prison and up to $500K in fines for allegedly participating in the attack. The FBI on Wednesday charged 14 people, mostly twenty-somethings, for their alleged involvement in an Anonymous-inspired attack on the PayPal website in December.

The hackivist collective Anonymous issued a call to arms last year after a number of corporate websites, including Visa and MasterCard, cut ties with WikiLeaks after the whistleblower group published secret U.S. diplomatic cables. In the case of PayPal, the online payment company severed its relationship with WikiLeaks after claiming the organization violated its terms of service.

PayPal CSO calls for AntiSec hunt

PayPal’s chief security officer has called on the industry to reveal the identities of hackers involved in the online Anti Security (AntiSec) movement in order to stop a string of attacks against organisations.

The movement was run by activists, some within the online Anonymous collective, who had banded together with others to attack organisations it accused of corruption and censorship.

Hackers hijack PayPal's Twitter account

Hackers seized control of a PayPal Twitter feed for more than an hour on Tuesday, then sent out messages criticising the payment processor in the second attack of its type in two days.

The hijacking of the PayPalUK Twitter feed came a day after hackers took control of a Fox News feed for more than five hours, then sent false tweets saying that US President Barack Obama had been shot dead.
