An attacker can steal your contacts, snoop on your email and erase all data from your iPhone or Android device using Microsoft Exchange, a Perth university lecturer has revealed.

Peter Hannay discovered that by pushing policy to phones he could wipe the devices clean and likely steal data and sniff outgoing emails.

How to fix Windows 8's worst annoyances

Windows 8, I want to love you, but your annoying quirks keep bringing me down.

After spending more than a year conquering the operating system's overhauled (and nonintuitive) interface in its various prerelease iterations, I've now entered a second stage of frustration: I find myself cursing at Windows 8's major changes less and less, but shaking my fist and swearing like a sailor at its little irritations more and more.

The Linux Foundation's promised workaround that will allow Linux to boot on Windows 8 PCs has yet to clear Microsoft's code certification process, although the exact reason for the hold-up remains unclear.

As The Reg reported previously, the Secure Boot feature of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) found on modern Windows 8 PCs will only allow an OS to boot if its code has been digitally signed with a key obtained from Microsoft.

Plenty of questions, few answers surface about early Windows 8 sales

Windows 8's sales are worse than Windows 7's were at the same time in its lifecycle—unless they're higher. They're also apparently worse than internal Microsoft estimates. But what those estimates are is anyone's guess. Truth is, we don't really know and we won't for some time. But combine the new operating system with the continuing conjecture over former Windows Division president Steven Sinofsky's departure, and you've got some great headlines.

Windows Phone 8 review: Microsoft lays a foundation for success

I'm an unapologetic fan of Windows Phone 7. I like the aesthetic, the consistent UI design and concepts, and the personal nature of the Start screen. I think it's a solid, stable, fun-to-use platform, and it's my operating system of choice when it comes to smartphones. It has been something of a love/hate relationship, however. As much as I like the software, I haven't liked the way Microsoft has managed it. In particular, the decisions the company has made around patching and updates have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Steven Sinofsky, President of Windows and Windows Live Division, is leaving Microsoft effective immediately, reports All Things D.

The move is claimed to be a result of growing discontent within the software giant, with a number of executives reportedly unhappy when working with him due to his failure to be a "team player." Such a move has striking parallels with Scott Forstall's recent exit from Apple.

Microsoft to kill off the Messenger client and regroup under the Skype brand

Microsoft's instant messaging and video chat are set for a major shake-up, with Microsoft announcing today that the Windows Live Messenger brand and client will be retired in the first quarter of 2013. They'll be replaced by the Skype client and Skype name everywhere, except for China, which will retain the Messenger naming.
