Volish chairman Sir William Gates III has said that there were difficulties in finding a CEO who can replace Steve "sounds of silence" Ballmer.

Gates, who is Microsoft chairman and sworn enemy of the mosquito, is on a four person team to find a new "Steve" and was chatting to shareholders about the difficulties in picking the next leader of the world's largest software company.

Cyber criminals target Silverlight users with new exploit kit

The creators of a Web-based attack tool called Angler Exploit Kit have added an exploit for a known vulnerability in Microsoft's Silverlight browser plug-in to the tool's arsenal.

Exploit kits are essentially malicious Web applications that check if visitors run outdated software on their computers and then exploit vulnerabilities in that software to install malware. They usually target popular applications that are accessible through browser plug-ins, such as Java, Flash Player, and Adobe Reader.

Microsoft has confirmed to SCMagazineUK.com that it is considering encrypting customers' personal data which it sends over the internet, in the wake of the allegations of mass electronic surveillance by the NSA.

The revelation that Microsoft is “evaluating additional changes that may be beneficial to further protect our customers' data” came after its EMEA vice president of legal and corporate affairs, Dorothee Belz, faced tough questioning on Monday from a Committee of European MEPs.

Stack ranking -- considered by a number of current and former Microsoft employees as a major detriment, both career- and morale-wise -- is no more at the company.

Microsoft is announcing to its full-time employees on November 12 that there will be no more curve and no more reviewing "on the curve" at the company. Lisa Brummel, head of human resources for the company, sent an e-mail to employees notifying them of the change today, according to my contacts.

New zero-day bug targets IE users in drive-by attack

A pair of vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer currently being exploited in the wild to install malware on computers that visit at least one malicious Web site, security researches warn.

The classic drive-by download attack targets the English versions of IE 7 and 8 in Windows XP and IE 8 on Windows 7, security firm FireEye warned in a company blog post Friday. However, the security researcher wrote that its analysis indicated that other languages and browser version could be at risk.

Microsoft rushes out fix to Office security exploit

Microsoft has released an emergency software fix after it learned hackers had exploited a previously undiscovered security flaw in its widely used Office software to infect the PCs of its customers with tainted Word documents.

The software maker said on its website it had released the software, known as a "Fix It", as a temporary measure until it provides an update that will automatically patch computers to protect against the new threat.
