Microsoft updates 'Metro-Style' Skype for better mouse, keyboard usage

Microsoft rolled out a new version of Skype for "Modern" (a k a Metro-Style) Windows 8.1 users on May 7.

Just as the operating system group did recently with Windows 8.1 Update, the Skype team also is focusing on making the app easier to use for those using mice and keyboards. From a blog post announcing the new 2.8 version:

Now that the IE zero day which caused so much panic over the last several days has been patched, researchers are much more free to discuss details of the attack.

Cisco's Snort IPS network shows that their customers began on April 24 with several phishing attacks.

The attack relies on getting a user to visit a web site with the malicious code and this was the purpose of the phishing emails. Cisco found these subject lines used in the attacks:

Microsoft fixes big IE bug -- even on Windows XP

Microsoft has issued a fix for a dangerous Internet Explorer bug that left the browser highly vulnerable across every major version -- including those that run on Windows XP.

The patch, delivered at 10 a.m. Thursday, comes out of Microsoft's usual Patch Tuesday cycle because of its severity. It affected IE 6 through 11 and allowed attackers to install malware on your computer without your permission that could be used to steal personal data, track online behavior, or gain control of the computer.

Microsoft Will Start Selling Xbox One in China in September

Microsoft will begin selling the Xbox One videogame console in China in September, sources familiar with the plans told Re/code. An announcement is expected as early as Tuesday evening.

Last year, Microsoft struck a manufacturing partnership with BesTV. Such partnerships with non-Chinese companies were allowed under a newly created “Shanghai Free Trade Zone” aimed at encouraging new foreign investments.

Not to be outdone by Microsoft, Adobe announces zero-day exploit patch for Flash

Adobe Systems released emergency security updates for Flash Player in order to fix a vulnerability that has been exploited in attacks against users since earlier this month.

The attacks were discovered by security researchers from Kaspersky Lab and were launched from a website set up by the Syrian Ministry of Justice to receive complaints about law violations. It’s not clear who was behind the attack, but the site had been compromised in the past by hackers.

Skype answers 2012's call, makes group video calls free

Today, Skype announced that the telephony service would immediately make group video calling free for all Windows/Mac desktop users, along with Xbox One Live Gold subscribers. The feature, which was limited to Skype Premium subscribers, brings Microsoft's service closer in cost parity to Google Hangouts, which offered free group video calls beginning with its launch in 2013 (and even before that when Hangouts were embedded in the original Google+).

Microsoft officially welcomes the Nokia Devices and Services business

Microsoft Corp. announced it has completed its acquisition of the Nokia Devices and Services business. The acquisition has been approved by Nokia shareholders and by governmental regulatory agencies around the world. The completion of the acquisition marks the first step in bringing these two organizations together as one team.
