Microsoft silent over IP vulnerability claims

Microsoft has refused to comment over allegations that computers running its Windows operating system are affected by a serious vulnerability in one of the Internet's underlying technologies.

The UK's National Infrastructure Security Co-ordination Centre (NISCC) published details of this denial-of-service vulnerability earlier this week that affects some routers, firewalls and voice-over-IP (VoIP) phones.

Can Service Pack 2 Make Windows XP Less Secure?

When Microsoft released Service Pack 2 for Windows XP last year, they claimed that its primary purpose was to make Windows XP much more secure. At the same time though, a quick Google search on the words “Windows XP SP2 Problems” will show you that the long awaited service pack has created lots of problems for some people. As reports of various problems became more numerous, I began to wonder if any of the problems that had been reported could be security related.

While we'll have to wait until May 12 for the big MTV debut of the next-generation Xbox, we have a few tidbits to mull until then. GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that they're positive that the next Xbox will be called Xbox 360, which more or less fits what everyone else is saying. More interesting, however, is their claim that the design will be largely platinum white, backing away from the black/alien-green look.

Microsoft is continuing its campaign to clamp down on unscrupulous system builders and resellers that violate license agreements and distribute counterfeit copies of Windows. In its latest action, Microsoft has filed eight lawsuits in seven states after uncovering the alleged malfeasance through a test purchase program.

Next Xbox to get MTV unveiling

Microsoft Corp. Monday said it would unveil the next generation of its Xbox video game console in a May 12 special on cable music and entertainment channel MTV.

The unveiling will be a first, as video game companies usually take the wraps off their new consoles at the industry trade show E3 -- which will be held the following week in Los Angeles.

Microsoft said the special would also air in Japan the morning of May 13 and across Europe that evening. Actor Elijah Wood will host the show.

Phoney Microsoft mail causes concern

A phoney email purporting to come from Microsoft is installing Trojan software on computers around the world.

The mail was sent out by spammers and asks the reader to install a Microsoft update. It has a link to a realistic looking Microsoft update page but the file installed, named Wupdate-20050401.exe, turns control of the PC over to the spammer.

Cops get cybercrime help from Microsoft

Microsoft is developing analytical tools to help international law enforcement agencies track and fight cybercrime.

Microsoft unveiled the tools development program at the kickoff on Wednesday of three days of technical training for Australian law enforcement agencies. The Forensic Computing and Computer Investigations Workshops are designed to help investigators fight crimes such phishing, online child exploitation and money laundering.

Microsoft Files 117 Suits in Fight Against 'Phishing'

Microsoft Corp. has filed 117 lawsuits against unknown Internet site operators who used "phishing" schemes to obtain personal and financial information from unsuspecting consumers, the world's largest software maker said on Thursday.

Often scam artists pose as banks or other legitimate businesses, sending out millions of e-mails or pop-up Web advertisements with requests that the recipient update their account information but instead direct them to fake sites.
