When I interviewed Sun chief engineer Rob Gingell last August, he hinted at a blurring of the lines between Linux and Solaris, if not an outright merger. Said Gingell: "Five years from now, when all the tribes intermarry, who is going to know what's Solaris and what's Linux, and who's going to care?"

Linux not ready for the desktop? Give me a break!

I'm tired of reading on an almost monthly basis articles asserting that Linux isn't yet ready for the desktop. Nonsense! Linux is about as ready for the desktop as Windows is. It's simply a matter of corporate and user inertia that's keeping Linux marginalized.

A Quick Way to Secure a Linux System

The first step in securing your system is to determine what the function of that system is going to be. For example, if the system is going to be dedicated to being an ftp server, then there is little reason to having samba or sendmail installed because the more services that are running, the more vulnerable the system is going to be. This cannot be stressed enough. You do not want services running that you won't be using.

The Simplest Linux Cluster - OpenMosix

Anybody want to make use their own unused Pentium based PC, rather then let them occupied your store space? Go for OpenMosix Cluster, it is the simplest cluster I've run it now, don't need to modify your existing program/application as it is actually a "Process Migrator" tool to migrate process to not so busy node, and you can attach new nodes when you feel the power of your cluster is not enough. The cons of the openmosix is it won't migrate treads and shared memory application (eg, Apache, mysql), but there is already a patch to do it. :)

The Quest for the Perfect Linux System...

This (quite long) article has been written by me for two primary reasons: One, to hopefully save someone else the time and hassle associated with trying out various Linux distributions, and two, to promote some discussion and feedback regarding what a modern Linux distribution should be, and of course to contrast this with what is currently available. I am exploring the offerings of MS Windows, BeOS and MacOSX, and then taking on a number of well-known Linux distributions.

Start from Suse 8.1, ReiserFS had been the default file system for SUSE, with reiserFS, you don't need to wait for fsck every time your workstation, server or notebook run out of power supply.
