Large volumes of data files, combined with the necessary high security made Linux and IBM the right collaborative choice to enable data sharing between healthcare institutions in different locations.

Dr. Bob Hollebeek, Professor of Physics at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of NSCP explains IBM's strategy for Linux in this environment to Rich Berman.

Novell has begun a widely available trial of its Open Enterprise Server, software that combines tools from the company's proprietary NetWare with the open-source SuSE Linux operating system.

Late last week, Novell posted the public beta for Open Enterprise Server on its Web site. The company has said it intends to finish the product by February.

Novell has been working on the combined NetWare-Linux product since it acquired SuSE Linux in November 2003. The upcoming product is central to the company's strategy of straddling the open-source and proprietary software models.

Novell has launched an indemnification scheme to protect its SuSE Linux Enterprise Server customers against what it described as "certain intellectual property challenges to Linux".

Novell's Linux Indemnification Programme follows a similar announcement from Hewlett Packard last year, but is not limited to copyright infringement claims from The SCO Group.

To qualify, customers must be running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 8 and, after 12 January, obtain upgrade protection and a qualifying technical support contract from Novell or a Novell or SuSE Linux channel partner.

For a theoretically free operating system, Linux is -- and will continue to be -- a cash cow, a research firm said Wednesday as it predicted the OS will bring in more than $35 billion in revenues by 2008.

Framingham, Mass.-based IDC said that overall revenue for servers, desktops, and packaged software running on Linux will reach $35.7 billion in the next four years. Currently, IDC pegs Linux's global total take at just under $15 billion.

Security research suggests Linux has fewer flaws

The Linux operating system has many times fewer bugs than typical commercial software, according to an upcoming report. The conclusion is the result of a four-year research project conducted by code-analysis company Coverity, which plans to release its report on Tuesday. The project found 985 bugs in the 5.7 million lines of code that make up the latest version of the Linux core operating system, or kernel. A typical commercial program of similar size usually has more than 5,000 flaws or defects, according to data from Carnegie Mellon University.

A security researcher has uncovered yet another set of security flaws in an image component, which could put Linux users at risk of system compromise if they view a maliciously crafted image.

The bugs, in the imlib image library found in most Linux systems, haven't been patched by the library's developer, but Linux vendors are currently rushing out patches. So far Gentoo, Suse and others have released fixes.

First Look At SUSE Linux 9.2

I'm not really sure if you would call this the first real SUSE Linux release from under Novell's rule, but I tend to think of it as such. Even though it's their official 9.2 release, I kinda feel like I'm looking at Novell SUSE 1.0 if you know what I mean (even though Novell recently released their own desktop this year). Almost like a rebirthing of sorts. SUSE has always been one of the best desktop distributions on the planet and I think Novell has enough knowledge under their belt to make this distro one of the most sought after enterprise-class desktops available today.

A project to create embedded versions of Gentoo Linux has achieved preliminary releases on x86, MIPS, PPC, and ARM. The releases include native core system binaries, cross-platform toolchains, and, for x86, an optional hardened toolchain. The year-old project needs developers to help add cross-compile awareness to source packages.
