Since I became editor in chief of Linux.com, I have gotten hundreds of emails requesting -- even demanding -- "free support" for "free Linux," not to mention endless complaints about how dare anyone put advertising on a "free software site" or charge money for a Linux distribution or how free software advocates often receive speaking fees for talking about free software. It's time to come up with a new name for software released under the GPL and similar licenses.

IPCop: An Overview

IPCop is a cut-down Linux distribution that is intended to operate as a firewall, and only as a firewall. It has some advanced firewalling features, including VPNs using IPSec. This article describes the set-up and use of IPCop, and contains a few comments about its features.

This article is based on IPCop version 0.1.1, which was in turn derived from SmoothWall version 0.9.9.

Sony starts selling Linux kit for PS2

Sony has begun taking orders for a $200 kit that lets Linux run on its PlayStation 2 video game console.
In an announcement Thursday, the company said it's taking preorders for the kit. The kit is expected to begin shipping May 22, the company said, meeting a deadline it announced at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in January.
