U.S. companies Caldera International and Turbolinux, Germany's SuSE Linux and Brazil's Conectiva said that by the end of this year they will shift their product lines to focus on a uniform Linux distribution called UnitedLinux. The move addresses concerns about the large number of Linux distributions, each of which must be taken into account by software developers.
The NSA has a free distro of linux entitled, 'seLinux'. as of the 2nd of this month they updated the kernel to 2.5.10 along with added some extra technical manuals and white papers. I may have to download it and try it out, though I would be interested in knowing what the more *nix profecient HITB members think about it. Check it out here.

Linux distributors including Caldera, SuSE and TurboLinux are expected to join forces tomorrow to unite on a common distribution. The news was scooped by eWeek's Peter Galli, under the headline Linux vendors gang up on Red Hat, which gets to the point pretty well.
Galli was told that the alliance hinges on a common distro. Whether this involves more than just joint marketing agreements, or extends as far as a new Computer Associates-style umbrella operation, we'll have to wait and see.

I was prepared for this review of SuSE 8.0 Professional to be a no-brainer. I had last used SuSE at version 6.4 before switching to Mandrake. I was basically happy with it then, and figured it had only improved since then. What I've seen after using SuSE's latest and greatest for the past two weeks has surprised me, and not all in a good way.
Learn a quick way to debug glibc functions by overriding the GNU C library. What do you do if you don't have the source for your application and it's failing because a GNU Library for C (glibc) function is returning something bad to the application? Because glibc is open-source, you can of course get the source code, make your changes, rebuild, and install.
Embedding a Web browser in your application eliminates the need to worry about which browser a client uses to view your pages, and also allows you to create custom tags that tie the HTML page back to your application. For example, for the help system in an IDE, a user could browse a function reference where you have created custom tags, and when the user clicks on the function name, the function call could be inserted into the user's code.
