European chief argues that total cost of ownership is lower
Microsoft has dismissed claims that Linux is more cost-effective for businesses, arguing that Windows is cheaper over its total lifecycle.
When asked by Gartner about Microsoft's intensifying battle against the open source operating system, European president Jean-Phillipe Courtois claimed that Linux is in fact more expensive to run than Windows.

Open-source software gave Microsoft a one-two punch this week, with the European Union and an African nonprofit educational organization showing preference for Linux systems.
The European Union awarded on Thursday a $249,000 (250,000 euro) contract to U.K.-based system-integrator Netproject to study the feasibility of moving the information systems of several member countries' governments to the Linux operating system from Microsoft's Windows OS.

The only thing I regret -- and, unfortunately, I predicted this would happen -- is that the manufacturers of various competing forms of Linux have become as money-hungry as those they used to despise.

I've always considered Linux to be a fun toy for those of us with the time to play with something that challenges our little gray cells. Installation has always been a challenge, and waiting for compatibility with new hardware has often required the patience of a saint.

L33tdawg: This should be pretty interesting to take a look at. I tested StarOffice back when it was something like version 4.0 and it sucked (from a resources and a literal perspective). Hopefully things will be different with CrossOver *grin*.

IBM Chooses Linux for 'Blue Gene' Supercomputer

IBM (NYSE: IBM) has chosen the open source Linux operating system to run on one of its largest, most powerful supercomputing projects, dubbed "Blue Gene."

The petaflop computer, which can calculate 1 quadrillion operations per second, is 100 times more powerful than the fastest computers available, according to IBM.
