AMD begins open relationship with Windows, seeks Androids and Chromebooks

AMD continues to soldier forward in the PC market, but CEO Rory Read wants the company to get at least 20 percent of its revenue from other sources by the end of this year. Some of this money will come in from next-generation game consoles like the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One. And some of it, according to a report from PC World, will soon be coming from Android tablets and Chromebooks.

Google Glass competitors vie for attention as industry grows

Plenty of eyes may be focused on Google Glass as the device attracts attention in the field of "augmented reality," but a crop of other players developing their own glasses-like products are also hoping to stand out as the industry matures.

Take Scope Technologies, which has partnered with Epson to develop computer-assisted glasses it calls the "augmented reality training system," designed to help guide the user through complicated industrial maintenance processes like assembling fuel pumps, making changes to HVAC systems, or fixing broken car parts.

Jelly Bean now on 33 percent of active Android devices, Gingerbread still leads

Google has updated the developer dashboard with new platform distribution numbers, and they show a nice uptick for Google's latest and greatest.

Jelly Bean (versions 4.1 and 4.2) have reached 33% of active Android devices, or roughly one-third of the market. Gingerbread, however, continues its slow slide downward while remaining stubbornly high.

Google takes yet another crack at taming email overload

Google is kicking off its latest effort to help Gmail users manage their messages -- a redesigned inbox.

The new inbox, which will roll out to all Gmail users over the coming weeks, sorts incoming messages into labeled buckets. The messages it deems most important flow into the Primary bucket, while social network notifications from sites like Google Plus are grouped under a Social tab. Email from sites like Groupon announcing vendor deals go into a Promotions category, while receipts and confirmations go into an Updates bucket.

Google to beef up SSL encryption keys

Google has announced plans to upgrade its Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates to 2048-bit keys by the end of 2013 to strengthen its SSL implementation.

Announcing the news on a blog post today, Google's director of information security engineering Stephen McHenry said it will begin switching to the new 2048-bit certificates on 1 August to ensure adequate time for a careful rollout before the end of the year.

Google Said to Consider Buying Waze Presaging Bidding War

Google Inc. (GOOG), maker of the Android operating system, is considering buying map-software provider Waze Inc., setting up a possible bidding war with Facebook Inc., people familiar with the matter said.

Waze is fielding expressions of interest from multiple parties and is seeking more than $1 billion, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private. The Palo Alto, California-based startup might also remain independent, instead seeking to raise a round of venture capital financing, the people said.

Tavis Ormandy bashes Microsoft's handling of security researchers, drops Windows zero-day

A Google security engineer accused Microsoft of treating outside researchers with "great hostility" just days before posting details of an unpatched vulnerability in Windows that could be used to crash PCs or gain additional access rights.

Microsoft acknowledged the vulnerability late Tuesday. "We are aware of claims regarding a potential issue affecting Microsoft Windows and are investigating," said Dustin Childs, a spokesman for the company's security response group, in an email. "We will take the appropriate action to protect our customers."
