The developers of CyanogenMod have released a new stable build of their operating system for dozens of phones and tablets. CyanogenMod is an open source operating system based on Google Android. It can be installed on a wide range of phones, tablets, and other devices as a replacement for the operating system that came with your device.

Cortana may currently "only" be an app, rather than an integrated component of the operating system, on Android, but that may soon change -- at least on the coming Cyanogen Android distribution.

Microsoft and Android operating system vendor Cyanogen announced a partnership back in April which called for Cyanogen to distribute some of Microsoft's consumer apps and services with its Open OS platform. At the time, the list of services that Microsoft officials said they'd customize and provide to Cyanogen included Office, Skype, OneDrive, OneNote and "Bing services."

Google reportedly tried to buy Cyanogen

A report from The Information (subscription required) claims that Google tried to buy Cyanogen, Inc, the maker of the custom Android ROM CyanogenMod. According to the report, Cyanogen's chief executive told shareholders that Sundar Pichai, the head of Chrome and Android at Google, met with the company and "expressed interest in acquiring the firm." The report says Cyanogen Inc. declined the offer, saying that it was still growing.

Nextbit, a mobile technology company founded by former Google executives Tom Moss and Mike Chan, today announced that Scott Croyle has joined as Vice President of Design and Product. Croyle, who was most recently Senior Vice President of Design and User Experience at HTC, will also join the company’s board of directors alongside Rich Wong from Accel Partners and Rich Miner from Google Ventures.

Cyanogen raises $7 million to build a better version of Android

Cyanogen, makers of popular software based on Android that extends the abilities of smartphones, is making a bid for the mainstream. The four-year-old company, which began as a one-person side project, said today that it has raised $7 million from Benchmark Capital and Redpoint Ventures. The goal is to vault past Blackberry and Windows Phone to become the third-most popular mobile operating system, after traditional Android and iOS. And the company is already closer than you might think.

CyanogenMod developers remove code that logged device screen-lock patterns

The development team of CyanogenMod, a popular community-built Android firmware, discovered and removed a line of code that posed potential security risks because it logged and stored device screen-lock patterns in a file.

The unwanted line of code was added back in August in CyanogenMod version 10, which is based on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean), as part of a new feature that allowed the size of the lock screen's dot grid to be configurable -- for example from the default 3x3 size to 6x6.
