PIII 1.13 GHz embarrassment continues

Word out of theRegister has Intel confirming the delay of the PIII-1.13GHz re-release ... back to Q2 2001. As a result t-Reg speculates that this may indeed never happen, given that the succeeding P4 should be cranking around 1.7GHz at that point. Assuming Intel stuck in the Q2 timeframe, this speculation seems quite reasonable, as even AMD's low-cost Duron will probably faster next year Q2. Hopefully Intel keeps it real and all, as it would be sad to see AMD raise those lovely prices, or decelerate the pace to 2GHz.

The good, wholesome chaps over at Ace's Hardware have updated their long-running series on High Performance CPUs to include some insight into the P4's architecture.

The Register is reporting on problems with the 850 Tehama chipset thus the P4 delay. The article also says that this delay has big OEMs worried about chip stability in future pre-builts.

"Dell is concerned that an instability within the chipset can cause the system to crash under heavy graphics load."
