Whether Intel's new 0.13-micron Northwood P4 is a good buy for Linux or Windows users I won't be able to say until I compare it to a similar high-end system by AMD later this week; but for now I can definitely say that, paired with the 850 mobo and 512M RDRAM, it's fast on both operating systems, if not spectacularly reliable.

L33tdawg: Frankly I don't really see the need for 2.2GHz worth of computing power -- especially where home and business users are concerned. I have been using a Pentium III 700E with 384MB for about a year and a half and it's suited me just fine... Then again, I don't play many games, so perhaps that might explain why I don't see the point in forking out the cash for the upgrade.

Consumers looking to buy 2GHz Pentium 4 PCs this fall may find the going a little on the slow side.

Recently, Dell Computer stopped taking orders for Dimension 8200 desktop PCs and other systems that include the 2GHz Intel processor, and this past weekend it pulled the chip from its Web site "configurator," through which consumers can pick and choose the features they want for a given system.

LONDON--U.S. chipmaker Intel said Tuesday that it has been inspired by song-swapping Internet service Napster and free operating system Linux to overhaul some of its technology infrastructure.
Despite Napster's short-lived success--it has been idle since July after stumbling over legal and technical issues--the company's technology helped Intel to limit expensive network bills, Intel IT Vice President Doug Busch said.
