"I could give you a brick for a wireless device, and you'd have no security issues at all," said Benjamin Haidri of Absolute Software at Thursday's GTC security panel. "But to use a device that is a true extension of your office environment," he said, "then you have a host of such issues."

"The only secure computer is no power, no disc and no user," echoed Michael Flanagan of HP, who moderated the session. That said, the panel got into a wide-ranging discussion of protecting networks, computers and data, that ranged from Volkswagens cruising parking lots with Pringles cans sticking out the windows, to janitors finding Social Security numbers in the trash, to the tribulations of developing, managing and enforcing security policies. People, it seems, are just a bit sloppy when it comes to pasting passwords on their monitors, computing "in the clear" at a coffee shop hot spot, or losing expensive laptops and mobile devices stuffed with confidential data.

Carelessness, ignorance, negligence, or just plain malice means the government security manager cannot afford to do nothing. " I know how much it will cost to prevent a breach," said Joe Tomasone of Fortress Technologies. "I don't know how much it will cost to recover from one."L33tdawg: Only 4 more seats available for the War Driving Kuala Lumpur Hands on Technical Training that's being held at The Westin Kuala Lumpur on the 5th and 6th June 2006.
