WiMax Is Gathering Momentum, On Its Way To 20 Million Users
Although WiMax is currently entering a period of rapid growth, the high-speed data technology will enjoy even more rapid growth in future months and years as the technology's mobile version takes off, according to a report issued Wednesday by In-Stat.
The market research firm said WiMax subscribers will reach 222,000 this year, and will grow to 19.7 million subscribers by the end of 2010.
Most subscribers currently utilize WiMax 802.16d, the fixed wireless version; In-Stat expects 802.16e, the mobile wireless version, to quickly overtake the fixed version and power the technology's future growth in spite of hurdles presented by regulatory uncertainty and spectrum availability.
The market share leader is Alvarion Inc., which is marketing its gear globally. Most WiMax end users are located in Asia, which is likely to continue to lead in the rollout of the new technology.
