Telus says hackers attacking voice mail systems

posted onMarch 15, 2006

Telus is warning its customers with voice mail of an increasing problem with hackers.

Some voice mail systems allow subscribers to use an outside line to access voice mail and allow them to then call out through the voice mail line.

The phone company says people are hacking into the system to make unauthorized long distance calls.

"This is a scam," says Telus spokesperson Shawn Hall. "It doesn't affect a lot of businesses – 200 last year out of millions across Canada – but when it does strike it can run up bills of several thousand dollars in just a couple of days. We're just encouraging customers to take a few simple steps to protect themselves."
