Is Sharing Wi-Fi Illegal?
Borrowing a neighbor's unsecured Wi-Fi signal could be against the law. Or it might be legal. The law is unclear, said cyberlawyer Mark Rasch.
"We have new technology and an old law. The law neither expressly prohibits it, nor expressly permits it," Rasch said.
I talked to Rasch after facing a moral question a few weeks ago: sitting in my father's apartment in New York, I opened up my laptop computer and discovered that one of the neighbors had an unsecured wireless access point. I could easily use my father's neighbor's Wi-Fi connection to gain access to the Internet. But should I? I asked readers to write in and let me know, and they did.
