Self Actualisation through broadband
I
bet you're sitting there going "oh no... its another one of L33t's
hair-brained theories". Well in a way you're sort of right although
- just hear me out kayz. I was sitting around the other day in my Business
Organisation class, and it was as boring as it always is - The topic for
the day was Maslow's Hierachy of Needs. Anyway, according to this guy
called Abraham Maslow, there are like 5 steps before you reach a state
of Self Actualisation (I like to call it digital nirvana) - it starts
from the bottom and moves its way upwards - Physiological Needs, Safety
Needs, Social Needs, Esteem Needs and it tops out at Self Actualisation.
Okay
okay that's all fine and well - but what the heck does this have to do
with broadband?! Well a lot actually, you see, the Physiological Needs
is pretty much taken care of already - I mean you're reading this aren't
you? (i.e. you've got a computer) Which means you've prolly got clothes,
shelther, food and all that shit taken cared of right? Okay so lets move
on to the Safety Needs - well this is can be summarised as the need for economic security - a good job, savings etc etc... in short you need money
- the more the better.
So
let me ask you one question then - How do we get well paying jobs? Through
the knowledge we have right... either you gain it through education *highly
unlikely, as I'm finding out*, or through hacking and exploration of systems
(in short through the skillz that you have).
How
do most of you gain knowledge for your uber 31337 skillz at hacking and
stuff? Most probrably by reading... and most likely reading stuff online.
So there you are, surfing for shit on a crappy 56K modem... the damn lights
won't stop blinking cause you keep yearning for more... surfing from hackernews.com
to god-only-knows-what.com - looking for information, trying to learn
more. Whats the main limitation to the amount of knowledge you can gain?
well firstly, the amount of time you have, and the connection to the net
that you're using. If you had a faster connection, you'd be able to surf
for more information and the amount of time you'd spend retriving it would
be less... So you get a fat ass connection, you download more proggies,
you read more articles, you learn more!
More
knowledge equals a better job, equals more cash. Once you've got the cash,
you go on to your social needs, you need friends - where do you find friends?
At school, on IRC wherever... why are they your friends? Well prolly cause
your kewl (Why would they think you're kewl? Perhaps cause you have more
knowledge to share with them and they come to you for advice and information.)
You wouldn't have all this information unless you had a fast connection
to get to the knowledge that's out there, so once again the bandwidth
factor comes into play - oh yeah, I almost forgot, you might have friends
coming to you cause you drive a kick-ass car and you've got loads of cash
(thanks once again to the high paying job you got, which you managed to
get through the knowledge you have, and the knowledge you gained was from
the net - see! It comes back to broadband once again!).
So
okay, you've got the cash, you've got the friends now you need the Esteem
Needs. Well that's pretty easy, you've prolly been working in the job
for quite a while, you're prehaps the most technical savvy person in the
office (thanks to your broadband pipe feeding your brain with information)
so say you get a promotion - now you're like the head of the MIS department
or the-geeks-without-pants department. You're in control - you've got
a higher level of self esteem - someone comes to visit you, you get to
show that you're "somebody" by ordering ppl around, or whatever
it takes to get you off. How did you get to this high level of power in
your office? Well though hard work (of course), through the knowledge
you have (the stuff you read online) and through the experiences you've
gained from your friends (perhaps the ones you've met online) so it boils
down to broadband once again.
So
my theory is this... Maslow was right - but all that he's said can be
summarised and shortened into one step. The need for broadband... the
carrier that you require to get you to the state of digital nirvana. Okay,
so I might be wrong... afterall I'm connected to the net via a shitty
56K modem, and I think I have a fair amount of computer knowledge. But
still... perhaps if I had a better connection, I'd know more... maybe
not. But at least I'd be able to download almost anything in sight, and
surfing the net would actually be a wonderful experience instead of a lesson in why the world is so unfair (I can't get broadband net access
here in Malaysia cause it fucking costs 36K per year - go figure... damn
telcos are always ripping ppl off).
Okay
- I'm sure you're saying "damn... I just wasted 2 minutes reading
this" - could be. Eitherways, the next time you're sitting around
with some friends or if you happen to be unlucky enough to have to study
Business Organisations in college or at uni, make sure you keep in mind
what I've said and mention that there's actually only one step to digital
nirvana aka Self Actualisation and it all comes down to broadband net
access.
Peace
out.
