Global internet security specialist, Trend Micro, has praised The American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, for its research into the security levels of wireless internet connections in the region.

The research, led by Dr Fadi Aloul, demonstrated a range of risks associated with using an unsecured wireless internet connection.

The most common and apparently “least serious” problem was the risk of an unsecured wireless connection enabling someone to use another’s Internet access without paying. However, experts are keen to stress that, once internet access has been hijacked in this way, all manner of problems can follow.

These include the potential for an individual’s connection to be used to impersonate that person, or the problem of malicious users using fake connections to obtain passwords, bank details or worse.

Dr. Aloul’s research was not restricted to the form that different malicious attacks on Wi-Fi computing can take. Simultaneously, the research team established a set of figures to quantify the extent to which simple protective measures are not being taken.L33tdawg: I'm surprised they're still recommending users turn on WEP - it's been broken for years and you're getting ZERO benefits from turning it on - it's WPA2 that you want.
