Russia Drops Microsoft As National Operating System
The Russian Government has announced that they are going to be dropping many current operating systems in an effort to craft a “national” operating system that will be based on the open source Linux OS. They are hoping to replace all of their state computers that run the Microsoft Windows operating system among others in an effort to save money, improve security of their files and to keep hackers at bay. Their ultimate goal is to reduce dependence on foreign software giants and to begin crafting their own software.
So far, no one has been given a preview of the new system, and many experts have questioned the viability of the move. Some experts have also questioned why the Russian government would not use the existing Linux systems, rather than taking time and money to develop their own.
The directive went largely unnoticed by the public until this week, and now many are asking that the government answer questions regarding the switch. Are they developing their own operating system in order to hide, or track the computer users? Some have claimed that he move will put the privacy of state employees at risk, and that the government will likely be able to see everything that they do on the state computers.
