A few weeks ago, I got my hands on the latest release from SuSE. After using it steadily since then, I can say that I'm pleased with 8.1, though it could use some refinements. Read on to find out what's in store for you with SuSE 8.1 Professional.

Of standards and things...

SuSE's 8.0 release, with updates, was the first of SuSE's products to receive the Linux Standard Base (LSB) Certification. The 8.1 release is the first to ship with that certification. What kind of impact does that have on the SuSE experience for a user or admin? None, really. It will make a difference in the future, providing other Linux vendors also standardize on the LSB specs, but right now it's really only interesting to developers and companies who want to support Linux. For the end user, it really doesn't change much.

I did notice that there are a few new top-level directories that I'm not used to. Specifically, the srv and media directories. This is odd, since LSB-compliant distros are supposed to comply with the File System Hierarchy Standard 2.2. srv and media are not part of that standard and additional top-level directories are discouraged.

As you might guess, the www and ftp directories live under srv. Instead of placing CD-ROMs under mnt, they now live under media. The floppy was also placed under media. I'm not really sure whether I like having a new top-level directory for removable media — I thought that putting the CD-ROM and other types of removeable drives under mnt made perfect sense.
