Pebble Time, Microsoft Band 2 Earn High Marks for Security
True mobile security is hard to come by these days, as a new study on fitness trackers and smartwatches makes clear. AV-Test Institute put seven Android wearables and the Apple Watch to the test and concluded that "some manufacturers are continuing to make disappointing errors."
Researchers tested the Basis Peak, Microsoft Band 2, Mobile Action Q-Band, Pebble Time, Runtastic Moment Elite, Striiv Fusion, and Xiaomi MiBand. They wanted to know if the data recorded by the tracker or its app was "secure against spying or hacking by third parties" and whether any health data collected by the devices was "secure against tampering."
The Pebble Time "earned the fewest risk points in the test – which translates to high security," the AV-Test Institute said, but the Basis Peak and Microsoft Band 2 also earned high marks. All three "show minor errors, but on aggregate, they offer few opportunities for attackers or tampering."
