New High Tech Copper and more
IBM has developed new chip technology called CMOS 95. This uses new high speed transitors and allows circuits as small as .13 microns. This new technology supposedly allows the chip to run 25 - 30 times faster than the chips currently in production. This means multi-gigahertz chips for the home user (eventually). IBM is currently going to use this technology in its high-end internet server named "eServer." You can currently find this technology in Apple's "PowerPC" line, and it is going to be used in Nintendo's New "Game Cube." This technology has also opened up a whole new world for the portable market. Read More here
My take on the home PC chip industry is, once we move away from the x86 architecture we will see what microchips can really do. Who wouldn't love having a 500 mhz RISC cpu in their desktop PC? Then again if you want that kind of power in a PC, go get a Mac. (I'm not an apple user, but they do use the RISC architecture.)
