Microsoft: Huge Patch Tuesday next week

Microsoft will launch a record number of fixes on next Patch Tuesday: 16 security patches will fix 49 vulnerabilities in applications like Windows, Internet Explorer, SharePoint and Office. Four of the 16 patches are labeled Critical and 10 of them are Important.

Most of the updates plug security holes that could allow malevolent internet users to inject malicious code into the users’ computers. As these holes are usually in features not switched on by default, Microsoft usually labels them as Important (the most critical updates are labeled Critical).

Twelve of the 14 security updates fix Windows vulnerabilities (several of them in Windows 7), both in desktop and server versions, two of them concern Office users (Word and Excel get fixed), and one of them is for SharePoint, Microsoft’s collaboration server software. One critical update will apply to all versions of Internet Explorer currently supported by Microsoft - except maybe to Internet Explorer 9. This update fixes a vulnerability that would allow hackers to execute remote code on the user’s PC.L33tdawg: Just in time for HITBSecConf2010 - Malaysia :)
