Malaysian legal info now accessible.. on a handheld
KUALA LUMPUR--Now lawyers can get instant references on Malaysian statutes via a handheld packed with a wealth of legal information. Dubbed Simon's Pocket Law, the pocket PC (a Hewlett Packard Jornada 548) has 110 statutes stored inside and has been touted to be the first of its kind in the country.
Simon Suresh, the brainchild behind the initiative, said the product was made possible by a strategic partnership between his company Lex Logica, Hewlett-Packard, Ingram Micro (M) Sdn Bhd, and PNMB-LawNet, a subsidiary of Percetakan Nasional Malaysia Bhd.
"The pocket PC compresses a library of law books into your palm," Suresh was quoted in The Star Business on Thursday.
Suresh who is the director of Lex Logica, said the company used its proprietary software to convert and compress data provided by PNMB-LawNet into the handheld.
Subscribers of the service need to purchase a Hewlett Packard pocket PC and pay an additional RM2,880 (US$759) for the service which also entitles them to two years of free updates of the statutes.
Currently, the Simon's Pocket Law contains 110 of the 612 government statutes.
Lex Logica hopes to sign up at least of half of the country's 10,000 lawyers for the Simon's Pocket Law service by this year.
