Linux phones ready for launch worldwide
Telefonica, one of the largest mobile operators in the world, joined wireless Linux foundation LiMo on Monday and along with five other major operators said it would sell phones using LiMo's open software this year.
The focus of the cellphone market has been shifting to software development since Google and Apple entered the mobile market during the past two years. LiMo is an alternative to leading operating systems from Nokia, Apple, Microsoft and Google. And mobile operators are betting on LiMo, where they have more control over software development, to make them more competitive and to save money.
“The biggest battle within the industry is for the control of consumer experience. Apple, Google and Nokia are getting to major operators' turf,” Morgan Gillis, head of LiMo, told Reuters in an interview.
