Kinect hackers are doing Microsoft a favor

Reports have been coming out left and right about new and interesting ways Microsoft’s new Kinect has been “hacked” and made to do amazing things.

Groups like OpenKinect came out with drivers and hacks within a matter of days after the Kinect’s release and have figured out that it can do quite a bit more than what it does on the Xbox 360 right now. Part of that is because the drivers currently running on the Xbox 360 are still pretty raw and aren’t coming close to tapping into the potential just yet. The same is true to an even larger extent with the current lineup of Kinect games.

However, the imaginations of techies everywhere are having no problem thinking of myriad ways to use Microsoft’s brilliant new hardware. Whether it’s touchscreen-like gesture controls reminiscent of Minority Report, or tapping into an iRobot Roomba in order to make a far smarter robot capable of mapping it surroundings in 3d and responding to gesture commands, these techies have been relentlessly innovative.
